Location:

Situated in MS Ramaiah Nagar, MS Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) has a very good location. It is well connected by BMTC buses which ply here from almost all parts of the city. The nearest bus stop is just about 2 minutes' walk from the main gate of college.

Infrastructure:

The campus of MSRIT is huge. It is so vast that it feels like a small village. All the courses that can be possibly taught are there in the campus and there are separate, often more than one building for each of them. Also new buildings keep coming up to accommodate for ever increasing courses and students. Infrastructure of some of the new blocks is all the rage while many others are undergoing renovations. Labs are equipped with all the necessary instruments and they are replaced with new ones regularly. There are more than one library of which students make use of. They remain open till 11.30pm during exams. A Digital library is also there which can be accessed twenty four-seven. WiFi is currently provided in only a few areas of the campus but LAN is accessible from labs and browsing rooms and serves purpose well. Sports facilities are something students feel should improve. There is a common playground for cricket, football and other sports.

MSRIT has separate hostels, charges for which are Rs.42,000 per year including food. Nothing about it is out of the world but they are decent, liveable ones. In fact they are much better than old hostels which had small rooms and dirty washrooms. Girls’ hostel have tiny rooms that need to be shared with 2 or 3 more people. Mess food is not bad but you get bored of it after a while. Also it is difficult to differentiate between North Indian & South Indian dishes that are available in mess, as the cook uses same masalas in all items.

For COMEDK (UGET) students – Rs 1.25 lakh

Faculty:

Faculty in MSRIT varies as per department - Mechanical has the best ones whereas EEE has quite average ones. Rest all departments have a mixture of good and average teachers with a few exceptionally good ones too. Overall faculty at hand are well qualified, experienced and students seem satisfied with the teaching. Also there are no issues with communication and English language as can be seen in many other colleges in the city.

Attendance:

Not as strict as PESIT but strict nevertheless. 85% attendance is asked for but it will be relaxed till 75% if you have genuine medical reasons or have participated in events. They are more serious with first year students and become somewhat lenient and more considerate 2nd year onwards. Apart from attendance college isn’t too strict or rigid for disciplinary issues and believes in giving freedom to its students in college and hostels.

Crowd:

Crowd is very diverse. One can find students from various parts of the country and various types of students too. Everyone is friendly, mixing and there are no anti-social elements. About 70% students are Bangalore-ites. Students are very enthusiastic and can be seen participating in some or other event throughout the year creating a lively, cheerful atmosphere.

Canteen:

There are 2 canteens in MSRIT campus - one in multi purpose block and another in ESB2. There's isn't much variety in the dishes but the food that is available is decent and rates too are highly subsidized.

Hangouts:

Lots of good places are there in nearby areas like Mathikere and New BEL road. Ranging from McDonalds to KFC to Subway to Pizza Hut and Dominos everything is there at a stone’s throw distance. There’s a ‘Shanti Sagar’ restaurant particularly popular among students.

Festivals:

‘Udbhav’ is the annual intercollege cultural festival held in March. It’s a mega event and sees a lot of participation from many colleges across the state. Apart from that there are many other departmental and committee festivals too. Basically there’s enough opportunities to shine in extra curriculars be it sports, dramatics or robotics.

Placements:

All those who meet the selection criteria of the companies get placed. TCS, Infosys & Cognizant are major recruiters. Core companies are also visit the campus for recruitment for all the branches. Average package given is around 4 LPA. MNCs like Microsoft are also noted to have picked up a few students offering salaries of 8 lakh.

M.S. Ramaiah Institute of Technology (MSRIT) is rightly considered among top 5 colleges in Bangalore. It’s a good college for overall development of a student as there is equal focus on studies and extra activities. And the four years spent over here will be full of enjoyment and good memories.

Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (Dr. AIT), Bangalore

NOTE:

1. Dr. AIT is an autonomous college under VTU i.e. they have their own curriculum, exams and rules but the degree is given by VTU. Also it is aided by the Government of Karnataka

2. Students are admitted only through Karnataka CET scores and a few Management seats.

Location:

Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (DAIT) is located in the Western outskirts of Bangalore very close to the Bangalore University’s Jnana Bharati campus. Some call the area Nagarbhavi, while some others call it Kengute... doesn’t matter, just reach near the University campus and ask for ‘Ambedkar College’, anyone will guide you from there. No problems with bus accessibility.

Infrastructure:

DAIT is an old Government Institution, so poorly maintained building and dusty classrooms are expected and acceptable. But what students feel is that the condition is deteriorating year on year, with even the labs not having appropriate equipments and apparatus, library having a shortage of new edition books and an acute shortage of classrooms for the number of courses which are running at the college.

Non-aided: Rs 36,090 per year

Faculty:

Dr. Ambedkar Institute of Technology (Dr. AIT) is known to have a lot of senior and knowledgeable faculty members but students say they are very “unmotivated” and leaving apart a few exceptions are not really able to deliver their knowledge and experience in the correct way. Mechanical is said to be worst among all departments where many lectures are cancelled because the teachers don’t attend classes.

Attendance & Discipline:

Strict attendance rules have been laid out wherein students have to compulsorily attend 85% of the lectures and practicals. A further 10% relaxation is officially allowed if you can produce the necessary medical documents but below that you can expect a shower of serious problems. However, a good rapport with the teachers can get you through, so make sure you don’t fall into their bad books during the semester, however bad they may treat you. Its autonomous state is an advantage here; as they would try and push you through.

Crowd:

Since admissions happen only through Karnataka CET (and a few management seats) you won’t find too many North Indians here except for the ones who’ve settled in Bangalore or other parts of Karnataka. A reputed Government institute with a good subsidy on fees means a lot of hardworking chaps from rural areas all over Karnataka who cannot afford other higher fee demanding colleges. Few students here are ACTUALLY involved in extracurricular activities like music or dance (less support for such activities from the college has further brought down this number).

Canteen:

The canteen isn’t sufficiently big to accommodate even 50 students at one time and during the lunch hour, the number of students entering the canteen goes much higher than 50. Imagine the state of chaos! With so many people ordering different food items, the temperatures shoot up by at least 100C. So with sweat trickling down their foreheads and into the food, the caterers try their best to serve every individual at the quickest but are later on blamed for ‘unhygienic’ sweaty food. Costs are higher than what a canteen at a Government college should have.

Hangouts:

Nothing as close as to stopover every day.

Festivals:

“Not being organized this year” says a student, who would perhaps have removed all his frustration on us had we asked him any more details. Maybe he was supposed to be the president of the fest and the college disallowed... just guessing!

Placements:

Two mass recruiters, TCS and HCL, make sure you get placed as long as you’re eligible (which generally requires a 60% average and no current back logs). Highest salary goes to around Rs. 5 or 6 lakhs a year but not more.

BMS College of Engineering (BMSCE), Bull Temple Road, Bangalore

Location:

BMSCE is located on Bull Temple Road in Basavangudi. It is easily accessible from all major areas in the city of Bangalore by BMTC buses. Those staying in outskirts might have to change buses at main bus terminals.

Infrastructure:

BMSCE is one of the oldest colleges in Bangalore, hence the infrastructure is understandably not very modern but it could be better. They are paying attention to the infra and modernization is a work under progress. However all the academic facilities are up to the mark and there is hardly any complain about it. Campus is enabled with high speed wifi internet which can be freely accessed by students. Research facilities like those present in IITs are lacking. Another thing which is lacking here is proper sporting facilities. There is only one playground for all sports that too isn't well maintained.

College hostels are really good, probably one of the best in the city and they’re fairly priced. The hostel do not have WiFi facility. The main boys’ hostels are across the road while girls’ hostel is inside the campus. There is also one international co-ed hostel which has got better facilities. A boys hostel can be found in the campus of international hostel. All the rooms are available on twin sharing basis. Charges for hostels outside the campus and inside the campus are Rs 77,000 & Rs ~60,000 per year respectively. Mess food is also not bad but it’s monotonous and one can’t have it all the year. Mess charges are Rs 37,000 per year.

Fee Structure:

• For students KCET students (govt. aided): Rs 18,090 per year.
• For students KCET students (unaided): Rs 36,090 per year.
• For COMEDK students: Rs 1.25 Lakh per year.

Faculty:

Faculties at BMS are one of the best in the field. They’re highly experienced and well-qualified too. But the problem with some teachers is that they seem to be somewhat reluctant to teach and act lethargic in class. Also many are very good at theory but have little or no exposure to industry and aren’t interested in promoting research work. Mechanical has got very strict staff while EC, CS & IS faculties are pretty chilled out.

Attendance:

BMSCE strictly follows VTU norms for attendance and won’t allow anyone below 75% attendance to write exams.

Crowd:

BMS has one of the best crowds in the city. In the words of a student, it’s “hip & happening, party type of crowd”. Students here are great in academics without being nerdy and they also participate in all extra activities too. About half the students are locals while the rest are hostel’ites and they’re from all parts of the country.

Hangouts:

There are lots of good places just around the corner and those have more time can go to MG Road or Jayanagar which also aren't too far.

Canteen:

There are many options to have food in the college – a canteen, a hostel mess, Coffee Day express, Nescafe, Nandini and Kamat’s. All of them serve tasty food and there’s good variety too.

Festivals:

'Utsav' is an annual techno-cultural festival held in April. It is considered a big thing in Bangalore and a lot of engineering and non-engineering colleges participate in it. Apart from this other festivals that are arranged by various department and committees are also on a large scale.

Placements:

BMSCE has amazing placement records. Almost 100% students secure good jobs. Big companies like Microsoft and Amazon visit the campus for recruitment apart from the regular ones like TCS, Wipro, Cognizant, HCL and Infosys. Highest package offered was 16 lakh. CS & IS has better placements but other branches also get their respective core companies like Cyprus Semiconductors, National Instruments, LSI etc. offering high paying jobs.

Established in 1946 BMS College of Engineering is arguably one of the best colleges not only in Bangalore but also in entire Karnataka to do your B.Tech from. All aspects of this college are likeable and you can enjoy your college life to the fullest here while also managing to perform academically well. Don’t think twice if you get this college.
